Breast pain and ovarian cysts share more overlap than most people realize. One common thread: both often respond to iodine.
Iodine helps regulate estrogen signaling. It downregulates estrogen receptors, supports healthier estrogen metabolism, and stabilizes estrogen-sensitive tissue. That is why it repeatedly appears in the clinical literature around fibrocystic breasts, breast cysts, breast dysplasia and hyperplasia, ovarian cysts, heavy periods, ovulation pain, endometriosis, fibroids, PMDD, and symptoms of perimenopause..
A 2024 review also found iodine supports metabolic health — reducing inflammation, improving insulin sensitivity, and modulating the microbiome.

Before you try it, one non-negotiable: test thyroid antibodies first.
If anti-TPO or anti-thyroglobulin antibodies are positive, stay at or below 300 mcg. Especially avoid potassium iodide, which is more likely to trigger or worsen Hashimoto’s. Stop if thyroid function changes.
If antibodies are negative, 1,000–3,000 mcg of molecular iodine (I₂) is a reasonable starting point. Molecular iodine is significantly gentler on the thyroid than potassium iodide. Pairing with selenium adds further thyroid protection. Higher-dose iodine is not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Topical application. For breast pain and fibrocystic changes specifically, painting Lugol’s iodine solution directly on breast tissue is a traditional naturopathic approach. Breast tissue concentrates iodine, and transdermal application delivers it locally while reducing systemic thyroid exposure. Avoid the nipple and areola.
Food sources: seafood (cod, shrimp, and tuna are particularly high), egg yolks, dairy from pasture-raised cows, iodized salt, navy beans, potatoes with skin, cranberries, prunes, and seaweed — though kelp also contains bromine, which competes with iodine uptake.
If this was useful, share it with a woman in your life who's been told her breast pain or cysts are "just hormonal." There's often more to the story.
